Any other platforms besides Steam?

Post by Rannous »

Quick question - will this game be available in any other way besides through Steam? I'm not a big fan of Steam, and would rather have a non-DRM copy if possible.

We have our own distribution method for the test version, so it's possible to play without Steam. The potential problem is that our publishing contract prevents us from selling the game separately. It might be theoretically possible to set up some kind of system which lets you enter a Steam key to get access to our download system, but since that would require a Steam purchase anyway, it might defeat the purpose. Also, our own system requires a key, so it's not fundamentally different from how Steam operates; it's still essentially DRM.

DRM or not, the monopoly is bad. It seems like Iceberg sells some games on GoG - what about yours?

I've been talking to the team at Iceberg about this. We would certainly like to do a GoG distro. But, it seems we can't guarantee that it will happen, as GoG will do their own vetting of the game just before release, and decide whether they want it in their catalog. That said, Iceberg does have a pretty good relationship with GoG, so my bet would be that we will be releasing on GoG at the same time we officially release on Steam.

Cool! I have no problem with GoG, I hope this happens. Looking forward to trying the game!

Will the beta continue to update itself post-GA? Or will I be forced to switch to the Steam version?

I'm not yet sure. I mean, when the game releases, the beta will officially be over. But it might be useful to keep a small private test server around for our own post-release development purposes. I'll need to talk with the guys at Iceberg about just what bearing our contract with them might have on this point.

Ok. Ideally I would like to transition from the beta to a GoG version or something similar with minimal DRM, once you guys GA. Not really interested in steam keys, for my own reasons (not interested in starting a steam debate, I will ignore anyone who replies and says anything about steam itself).
