Carriers = auto win?

So I faced a carrier with, I believe, interceptors and it ended my 5 cruisers and 4 destroyers. I tried Defense Lasers and Turbo lasers, PD Ion beams and PD coil guns and I think I remember hitting -one- of them. The missiles I got here and there, but wow. I going to have to restart if I can't defend against one carrier. It literally went through everything I had.

I'm gona try those anti missiles and interceptors of my own.

I'm also gona gripe I cant put missiles on destroyers.

I upgraded the planetary defenses but now I have no idea how I did it or can't any more.
** Found answer- I have to click: New Design - Edit Design - and I can select planetary defenses -- Sorry.

It's worth noting that the game balance is about to change fairly dramatically, when the current round of tech changes migrate to stable. That said, feedback on balance is helpful. Though in the short term, I fear things may actually get a bit worse, before they start to get better. The new hull layouts and tier 3/4 shield and power systems have thrown some odd curves in the existing balance.

With more tech, I can imagine the difficulty of balance. Even games around for years have some balance issues. I'll do my best to tell you what I see past the explosions.

This should also probably be a FAQ question. Right now, the rules for upgrading and refitting defenses are a little odd. In your ship design screen, you'll see 1 or more "Planetary Defense" designs. Editing those designs automatically updates all your bases to use the edited spec. "Planet Defenses 1" updates all planets with 1 defense improvement, "Planet Defenses 2" does the same thing for planets with 2 defense improvements, etc.

You could also go for a sacrifice play, take one of your destroyers, fly it into the heart of the swarm and self destruct, it wont get them all but it should get enough.
