What's the difference between putting a light or medium weapon in a medium or heavy slot, except for a different appearance?
The weapon fires the same amount of shots so I'm a bit puzzled

It is a bit complicated; and this is another UI I think we're going to need to overhaul at some point. But, the idea is that many weapons (like Lasers) can fit in either a medium or heavy hardpoint, but, some like "heavy laser" or "heavy plasma" require a heavy mount.

Similarly, there are several weapons (like Defense Lasers) that will fit in both a medium and a light slot, but, not a heavy slot.

So there is no real benefit in doing so? Maybe increasing the shots fired by 50% because visually these are dual turrets now ;)

Yeah -- there's a whole host of improvements I want to make to the tactical animations -- multiple-beam attacks as appropriate are just the start of it :) But, there's other core stuff that needs dealing with first -- the AI problems (that you'll doubtless encounter soon, if you haven't yet) are at the top of the current list.

I did find a benefit after all... Disruptors and later Fusion beams seem to be more effective than most of the heavy weapons and 360 PD weapons are cool too, though my death stars did not need them.
