How do you select ships in a tactical battle?

You can band select, click and drag. Also shift-click on the ones you want. If you are the attacker, you can add and remove ships from the attacking force before the fight by clicking them to toggle the highlight.

Either of those what you meant?

Only click and drag with shift works for me in the tactical battle. Click doesn't work, shift-click doesn't work. Some people confirm this behavior here on the forum, some (like you) have no problem.
What is the key? Some hardware/software difference? Is this going to be worked on?

Shift-click to add works for me. That it isn't working for you is a bug. Last I checked, you were playing on a laptop, one with, I'm guessing, a US keyboard layout and a trackpad?

Yes, a US laptop.
Also didn't work on a desktop with "normal" mouse, but there the UI was very luggy, so it's hard to say.
