I don't use multiple monitors but yes the motherboard has a video adapter.

As I just said over on the Steam forums, the two potential fixes I'd try next are:

1) Reinstall your graphics drivers (even if they're 'up to date', applying a recent windows update might have corrupted them).

2) Try going into the Steam properties for Stars in Shadow, and disabling the 'show in-game overlay' option.

If either works (or doesn't), please let me know.

Uninstalling the game and then reinstall seems to have fixed it.

Glad there's a workaround. I'm going to share this with some of the other Steam users on the bug report forum who seem to have run into a related problem.
