Diplomacy System Discussion

Post by Devildogff »

Hoping to prod you guys in to talking about it a little bit, but also initiating this to start discussion on what we'd like to see.

I'll start off by saying that flavor text is really important to me and is necessary for me to enjoy diplomacy. Race-specific flavor text creates immersion in ways that many other mechanics simply can't. I'd love to see the Phidi talk about money and have weird sayings regarding water and their place in it, for example.

What about you guys?

I'd agree that good flavor text is very important. Another factor too would be having the species behave fairly consistently, or at least with a consistent 'personality' when played by the AI (ie, the Gremak will nearly always attack if you are weaker, the Haidur will only break existing treaties in extreme circumstances, as some possible examples).

A couple of additional thoughts on stuff I'd like to see:
1) Spoils of War: the ability extract tech, cash, food, etc from a defeated power, or offer the same to end a war.
2) Neutral Zones: The ability to agree to not colonize or place outposts in certain systems with other powers.
3) Peacemaker: One thing a lot of games lack is the ability to say 'make peace with a third power or face my wrath' (or 'if you want to sue for peace with me you also need to leave my allies alone'). One thing that drives me crazy in a lot of games is that I can't protect my friends or allies (or even useful trading partners) in any proactive fashion other than wiping out predatory powers.
4) Why did you break that treaty?: Another useful thing would be the AI giving you hints about why they just broke that trade/research/whatever treaty, so you could either attempt to repair relations or at least understand what factors are influencing the AI right now.
