Stars in Shadow Let's Play

Post by nweismuller »

I don't know how many people are even still watching this forum, but maybe a couple of you might be interested in my ongoing LP of Stars in Shadow on the Something Awful forums. If anybody takes a look, I'd be thrilled to hear about it- knowing people are actually reading what I'm doing is always gratifying.

It's a dumb site name, but it has a big Let's Play subforum and did so back when I first decided to get into LPing. I'm fairly out of sync with the general Something Awful site 'culture', but so it goes.

Hi, nweismuller! Glanced at LP, unexpectedly encountered pretty detailed piece with lots of screenshots and in-character writing. So will dive in it later, without rush and in appropriate mood. Thank you for the effort!

I'd be curious to hear your reactions once you get a real chance to look it over. (For that matter, what did you expect, heh?)

I really like the combination of in-character explainations for the various situations and decisions, followed by the OOC details for what and why.
The growing unease and outright exasperation of finding they're surrounded by a collection of what seems to be the galaxy's most troubled people is very easy to imagine being an actual Phidi response.

And some of the participation comments are pure Opil.

Great AAR! Didn't finished it yet, but like very much so far. Most adorable are detailed lore explanations for those not familiar with SiS. This is in contrast with some AARs by other authors, consisting of dry "did this"-"ordered that".

Playing these games as a story is what I tend to do.Just meta gaming for the win is not fun for me.I will actually help in alliances etc. :D

OK, that took stupidly long, but hopefully I'll be quicker with the next one- a new major update here:

Actually, you know, if people want to place votes here in the absence of a Something Awful account, I'll tally those as well. I hope people appreciate the LP. :)

I've been loving it, but I'll need a SA account to keep reading updates it seems.

A note from an Engineer with regard to the Kazatel system:

It would not be strictly nescessary to undertake the (rather expensive) development and deployment of full-scale 'habitat domes' in order to take control of this world and begin to process of contacting and uplifting the resident population there.

Since we have already developed larger and sturdier hull construction techniques and more effective Fusion power systems, it should not be too difficult to put together some form of permanent space-borne residence for our population.
Placing such a facility in orbit about that world should give us control over the surface, allowing for normal devolpment without anyone having to 'get thier fins dry'.

(Research 'Space Habitats', build a habitat outpost, fill it with population, and deploy it over the inhabited world in Kazatel.)

[e]

With regard to the recent 'wargames':
If intelligence is correct, a not insignificant portion of the armament of Gremak ships are light supporting weapons which would be primarily defensive in nature. However, in the absence of any counterable threats these weapons would likely be use offensively further magnifying the damage potential of the ships.

If we were to 'borrow' an idea from the Tinkers and create a small ship who's sole function is to carry as many guided missiles as possible into battle, the defensive weapons of the Gremak ships would likely prefer to shoot at these missiles rather than our ships.
Any missiles that hit thier targets would just be a nice bonus on top of 'diluting' thier firepower as it were.
It would not be difficult to modify a scout hull to carry external weapons pods full of missiles, the main challenge would be diverting resource to actually develop and build them.

It might also be worth noting that in theory these missile ships might also be of utility for attacking fixed defensive positions, if that eventuality ever swims up.

(Research 'Guidance Systems' and 'Magazine Bays', then build a number of missile destroyers fitted with as many missiles as will fit plus an extra ammunition reserve.)
