Anti-missile missiles

Is the animation for anti-missile missiles a placeholder? I was just a little surprised to see grey lines come out of my ship like coil gun fire when I was expecting to see actual missiles.

Also, I kind of figured they would have a similar range to actual missiles. Something you could fire to intercept enemy missiles at long range. My escort cruiser had to enter normal PD laser range to fire the anti-missiles so I don't see a real advantage to having them since they have limited ordnance that other forms of PD don't have to worry about.

All of the projectile weapon graphics (anti-missiles, mass drivers, plasma torpedoes) are placeholders and appear as beams.

Im kinda hoping that antimissiles act like regular missiles, it be nice to have ranged anti missile capability and not half to use my medium weapons.
