Question on hardpoints

Postby KaosLi » Thu Mar 29, 2018 12:35 pm

Apparently I can put light defensive weapons on every hardpoint. In fact, the auto-design throws light weapons on *everything* except dedicated torpedo slots now that I have primary beams. And this is despite the regular medium mounts specifically saying that "unlike turrets, medium mounts are unable to equip light defensive weapons."

I took a look to see if this was mentioned already, and couldn't find anything here but I did see an older post on the Steam hub where Arioch specifically said "You can mount PD guns in turrets, but not fixed slots. So if you want dedicated PD platform, the escort cruiser is not a bad option." So I assume this is not working as intended?

Have tested with Ashdar, Human and Yoral (screenshot attached for Yoral) so far. Haven't done full plays with the rest and their starting ships are all full turrets (or on Phidi case, no weapons at all) so I can't tell yet but I assume it's the same for them.

Turrets and fixed mounts used to be two different types of hardpoints, having different firing arcs and weapon graphics, and some different rules for what weapons could go in each slot (point defense weapons could not go in fixed mounts). This has evidently been changed so that all medium and turret hardpoints are now just "Medium" hardpoints, but it has left some graphical, info and UI issues (are formerly fixed mounts now 360? hard to tell). I'll take it up with Sven.

Testing with a basic Yoral destroyer:
- Medium weapon in fixed mount gets fixed mount graphic and a forward arc.
- Medium weapon in turret mount gets turret graphic and a 360 arc.
- Light weapon gets a turret and 360 arc regardless of what mount I put it in.

So there is still a distinction between a turret and a fixed mount under the hood, but at the moment the only way to tell the difference is by looking at the weapon graphic itself. Turrets have a 360 degree firing arc, and fixed weapons have a forward 90 degree arc. We will update the UI so that it more clearly states what the firing arc of the hardpoint is; this will probably be done at the same time as we revamp the Mods UI.

The exception to the firing arc rule is that point defense weapons always have a 360 degree arc.

It would be really useful to be able to see arcs in combat on the list of weapons. Even if it's just abbreviated ("Turret" or "Tr", vs "Forward" or "Fwd").

Yep. I will probably use some kind of icon (circle for 360, wedge for 90). However, the Ship Designer UI update will probably happen before the tactical combat UI update, as the latter will be more comprehensive.
