[Crash] Crashes building Tinker's Juggernaut

Postby nathanebht » Sat Oct 21, 2017 2:51 pm

First crash I've had with this game. Started a new DLC game as the Tinkers. Many turns in tried to queue up a Juggernaut. Crash. Load last autosave. Tried again. Crash.

Could you upload the logs for this game? (in Options menu, click "Upload Game Logs" and then post the resulting save name here so we know which one it is)

Uploaded game_5144. I did use Steam's verify integrity of game files feature and it didn't help.

For the uploaded game. End turn, queue Juggernaut at one planet, then queue another Juggernaut at a 2nd planet. Immediate crash after clicking the 2nd Juggernaut to queue.

Thanks for the upload.

I'm not able to reproduce the crash on my computer. What are the specs of your machine (OS, video adapter, cpu & memory)?

This is a confusing one. There's no hint of an error in the logs you uploaded, and your machine should be more than capable of running SiS without bugs. (Also I, like Arioch, can't get the bug to reproduce from the save you've uploaded.)

I can imagine that there might be an issue with a corrupt art asset causing some kind of problem -- if that is indeed what's going on, going into your Stars in Shadow\ directory, and deleting the ArtCache\ and PrebuiltArt\ directories, then doing another file verification pass might fix it; as might a full reinstall of the game.

Though this is all based on the somewhat tenuous theory that the issue has to do with the art asset caching, which is not necessarily the case. Have you been able to continue playing this game by, say, doing something else before queuing the second juggernaut? Or is the crash consistent whenever a juggernaut gets added to the queue?

The "sis64.exe has stopped working" error comes up and I'm immediately taken to desktop when I click close program. Might be why there is nothing in the logs?

Deleted both art directories. PrebuiltArt had 59,000 files in it. Then did a file verification and it downloaded 1+ gigs. This didn't change anything. Was able to reproduce the error with the exact steps I listed before.

Then I loaded the savegame again and did 10 different actions before trying to queue a juggernaut. This time the game crashed when queuing the first juggernaut.

Ok. I have one more relatively quick test I'd like to try. If you're up for it, would you go into your Steam Stars in Shadows properties pane, and select BETAS and opt into the 'hotfix_testing' branch? Then fire up the game again and let me know if it still crashes?

(In this branch I've tried 'pre-baking' a few more assets in the hopes that this will avoid the issue.)

Steam gave me the 33.1 MB patch. Loaded the save. Did an End turn, queue Juggernaut at one planet, then queue another Juggernaut at a 2nd planet. Immediate crash after clicking the 2nd Juggernaut to queue.

Ok. That's a bit discouraging. When the game crashes, does it give you the option to create a memory dump, or show some other dialog? If so, could you upload the dump file to dropbox (or something similar), and send me a download link at ashdar.games@gmail.com..?

On more (simple) thing that might be worth trying would be to try running the game in 32 bit mode, and see if that has any effect on the problem. So, specifically, open up the Stars in Shadow properties in your steam library, go to LOCAL FILES -> Browse Local Files, and run sis.exe. That should start the game in 32 bit mode, and depending on the nature of the bug, that change might help.

When the crash dialog comes up there are no options for a memory dump or anything. Just to close. Maybe those 3 events from my Windows app log will be useful?

Tried the 32 bit exe. This had no problem queuing up Juggernauts to build. Queued up a Juggernaut to build on three different planets. No crash.

Figured it would be good to test to see if any other problems occurred with the 32 bit exe and Juggernauts. Went with the 3 building Juggernauts and fully played 6 more turns until one got built. Everything worked fine until I clicked the ? on the built Juggernaut to see its details. Then the 32 bit exe immediately crashed.

Thanks for all your help tracking this issue down. When the crash dialog comes up, can you open windows task manager (ctrl+shift+esc), and look for SiS in the Apps list? If it's there, you should be able to right click on it, and select "Create Dump File". Said dump file would likely be very useful; assuming the option to create it is there.

I also have an issue with the Tinker's Juggernaut specifically.

I can design one without problems, I can build one, so far no issues.
But when construction is finished and I select a Juggernaut hovering next to my planet, I get an instant crash.
Happened in 2 different games allready, only with the Juggernaut.

I don't know how to upload the log though, don't see this "Upload Game Logs" button you said.
Running in 32bit gives the exact same crash.
I have made a dump file from the task manager, but it's 2GB big.

Dump files will often get considerably smaller if you zip them; but it will still be a very large file (500mb+). The easiest way to transfer such large files is usually with a third-party cloud storage app, like dropbox. But, I'll private message you a link that might also work as a direct-upload option.
