Installation Experience on Two PCs

Installed the beta on two PCs. One install was successful the other wasn't. Both installs appeared to have downloaded well after I instructed my security software (Norton) to trust the installer program.

The successful PC has the following: Windows 8, 3.4 GHz AMD A4-5300 APU with Radeon HD graphics, 4 GB RAM, AMD Radeon HD 7480D display adapter.

The other PC displayed only a white screen and cursor after I pressed play from the updater window: Windows 7, 2.7 GHz AMD Phenom 1045T Processor, 8 GB RAM, AMD Radeon 6700 series display adapter.

Hope this helps. The game looks great and I look forward to spending some time playing!

Interesting -- thanks for this. The "white screen of death" has been reported by mharmless as well. I'll be looking into it. But, fortunately, it looks like you may have one of the few AMD cards that the game is more or less compatible with.

I'll ask you to keep on eye out for things that look like they might be display glitches when playing on your HD 7480D -- places where I'm worried include the dynamic caustics on the Phidi ships, and the rendering of most of the system suns.

"Next" button crash.

Not sure if this is related to my the AMD card, but I've tried three games and proceeded about a dozen turns before each game became unresponsive with a circular waiting cursor. There was no indication anything was wrong before the game stopped responding.

I'm developing a hunch that there's some quirks to AMD's texture handling. Hopefully, once I figure out what that quirk is, many of these crashes will go away.

There's a new build posted to the dev distro that includes enhanced logging tools. If you'd update to dev, then run the game with the '-verbose_gl' command line option, you should generate a file in Stars in Shadow/logs called gl_log.txt.

That log file is probably going to be most informative on the machine that's breaking worst. If you could generate it using the "white screen of death" box, I'll see what I can make of it.

I have updated to the dev have successfully run the game from the command line without the -verbose_gl, but I must be entering the -verbose_gl portion incorrectly. Please let me know the entire command line to type. Attached is a log I can generate that may be helpful.
