I kind of feel like you need more weapon mods to extend the tech tree in between weapon researches. its possible after a certain level in research to just fly into newer and better weapons without really having time to mount them. There's no refinement really past ion, and missiles and kenetics have...

How much of the tech tree is in game?

Its not only a question of how much of the tech tree is in game as well as how many/much of the tech's are fully working.

I get that some techs are placeholdery, and some are to be renamed, and some are just not done yet, im just wondering on what has not been added yet.

Can there be an effect when a ship is retreating?

Something visual to show that a ship is trying to leave combat.

Also can a ship retreating be a tad more explosive if its destroyed? FTL energies and all that.

I would say yes they are, after you research them you can jump from any star you own to any other star you own in one turn.

the question becomes upgrading, how do you do it after the defence is built? Also if you are going that route to lock them down, we are going to need more options. Gun, Missile, Fighter, Shield. I have found that you can modify the planetary defenses, but the alternate versions you can unlock do not show up on the build screen only what I assume is the primary. given you can unlock a second defence slot through research, it would be nice to be able to stack different defenses, guns with fig...

It's not so much the in battle retreating as it is the galaxy map retreating. Instead of the battle screen option popping up fleets will redirect just before reaching the system. As in the turn they should arrive all enemy fleets will bail and go someware else. Ah, yes, that's a separate issue, but...

I actually see missiles as somewhat weak, the very low ammo reserves of ships dictate that either a ship strips off most of its passive defenses in order to carry enough ammo for long (or multiple) combats or use a mixed ordnance ship limiting there use to kill strikes or harassment.
