If AI initiates the battle, they will not flee as the calcualtion takes place before the initiate it If player is attacking, then the AI fleet moves first (being the defender) - if you see that the AI did not move in its first turn, that means that they have hit the retreat button and will be gone ...

One thing that isn't quite clear is what the purpose of enslaving pops actually is. It penalizes their yields across the board. Wait, there are minor faction stations? That have shields? I've never seen a minor faction with a station, unless you mean marauders, and pirate bases don't even have shields, and what makes pirate bases tough is their defending fleets. They'd have to basically be FREE to build, because otherwise I can't really see the justification for taking up build time on something that serves no economic value. Hell, I barely even build my own warships, I just steal the AI's.

I never really get to use them on Brutal, either. Probably because I tend to use only what the AI uses due to my rampant kleptomania.

There is at most one ancient super-dreadnought on a map. Requiring capture of this to build SD's means at most one faction in a game can ever build them, and this might not be the player's faction. That would effectively make the shields 3 or 4 times harder to penetrate, which seems unbalanced. Honestly, by the time you're relying on a station to save you, you're already toast.
